Sudden Inner Ear Hearing Loss
Also known as Sudden Seonsorineural Hearing loss (SSHL) is a medical EMERGENCY and requires immediate treatment. It is defined as a loss of 30 decibels in three frequencies over a few hours or a few days.
For some people the loss is temporary, while others need medication. If left untreated, it may result in a permanent hearing loss.

What are the symptoms?

Some people discover the hearing loss first thing in the morning while others only notice it when they use a phone on the affected ear. Some notice a loud, alarming “pop” just before their hearing disappears.
People with sudden deafness may also have vertigo (balance problems), tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or a feeling of fullness in the ear.
What causes it?

Although it could be related to viral infections, exposure to certain drugs or blood circulation problems i.e., the cause remains largerly unknown.
What should I do?

If you experience SSHL, you have to seek medical attention immediately. Go to A&E and ask to see an ENT doctor or contact a private Audiologist for an emergency hearing test.
If not diagnosed and treated urgently, the hearing loss may become permanent.
